Stuart Fletcher - U.S. Army

David Ghormley - U.S. Army

Warren Greene - U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. Captain

Ronald Grosman - U.S. Army

Ron writes:

DAVE  GHORMLEY AND I WENT TO THE L.A. INDUCTION CENTER TOGETHER IN NOVEMBER OF 1966 AND WERE PUT ON A GREYHOUND BUS FILLED WITH OTHER KIDS AND SENT TO FORT ORD FOR BASIC TRAINING.  I CAN STILL REMEMBER SHARING OUR BOX LUNCHES ON THE BUS TOGETHER.

DAVE AND I SLEPT IN THE SAME BUNK BEDS AND WOULD TRADE OFF HAVING THE TOP OR BOTTOM BUNK.  EVERY EVENING  AT 10:00 PM WE WOULD LISTEN TO THE PLAYING OF TAPS OVER THE LOUD SPEAKERS, WONDERING IF WE WOULD EVER MAKE IT HOME, AGAIN.  DAVE SHIPPED OFF TO VIETNAM AND I STAYED AT FORT ORD AND WENT THROUGH BASIC TRAINING A TOTAL OF 16 TIMES OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS.  NO I WAS'T AS STUPID AS MANY THOUGHT, I WAS JUST BIG ENOUGH AND DUMB ENOUGH TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS FROM MY TRAINING D.I. AND WITH HIS HELP I BECAME A DRILL INSTRUCTOR IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY.

Carter Harrington - U.S. Navy Pilot

Carter Harrington began his 13 year career in the United States Navy after graduating from college in Oregon. Carter writes:  "I started Navy Flight Training in 1968 and spent 5 years on active duty, with another 8 years flying in the Navy Reserves.  In the 5 years on active duty, I went on two West Pac criuses to the Tonkin Gulf, flying A-7s off the Aircraft Carrier Oriskany (which they just sunk off the coast of Florida earlier this year).  I flew 280 missions, got over 400 carrier landings and met some of the greatest men in the world.  The best way to describe the experience is to put these two Hollywood movies together....."Officer and a Gentleman", and "Top Gun".  You put them together and you would have a realistic view of the life of a Navy pilot in the 60's and 70's.  The military was one of the best experience in my life and I owe it all the my father and his stories about his life in the Navy during WWII."

Destoyer and one on an Aircraft Carrier.
