Hi Ellen, many of us are on facebook, and maybe we should create a Spartan group? Currently, the way to find friends from Pali is by scrolling to the bottom of the facebook page after clicking find friends. At the very bottom of finding friends you will see Pali 1964 if you added that info when you registered on FB. Click on that and it will list all Pali 1964 friends.
Hope that helps ! Bonnie

I finally found this site again. Lost it last October when my computer crashed.
I see that there is a Facebook Site for all us Spartans now.
Not being very savvy on Facebook; can someone tell me how to find it?
With much appreciation and kind thoughts to you all,

Hi Spartans,
Hope you are all having a GREAT Summer ! I'm off to Paris, Dublin and London next week with my 2 oldest grandkids, 16 and 14 yrs. old. How time flies. Sometimes I think.....gosh that's how old we were at Pali and will these kids stay connected with the friends they are making now the way we all have ? Lately I've been in contact with Karen Olsen Sisk....so much fun catching up on the past 45 years ! Time flies soooo fast...ENJOY every moment !
Best always,
Bonnie

Anyone out there ?? Please post a message and tell us what you are up to. This summer I am taking my 2 oldest grandkids Mike 16 and Brittany 14 to Paris, Dublin and London. To have a grandson who drives to high school REALLY makes me feel OLD. He plays football for Tesoro High School in Mission Viejo. Going to the football games really takes me back to those "fun friday nights" we used to have watching our own Palisades Dolphins !!! Time passes so quickly......Enjoy EVERY minute.

Bonnie, and others; Many heartfelt thanks for your kind and loving words at the death of my mother. Your words meant to much to everyone in our family! Your remembrances of both my father and mother were heartwarming indeed, to all! I can't begin to express my deep gratitude! Dad collapsed shortly thereafter, and is being treated at my brother's hosp; Hoag. We are extremely worried about him and hope he can return hom in another couple of weeks.
Thanks again for going beyong the call, by sending your messages! Love and warm hugs, Lynne

Dear Lynne, I just read the article in the Palisadian-Post about your beautiful Mother......may she rest in peace. You are so blessed to have had her in your life for so many years. I lost my Mother 11 years ago and think of her everyday. Your Mother and all of our parents lived in the BEST of times. Raising children in the "happy days" 1950's when families were so close (no ipod's, no computers, 1 television to share together) made families closer. Your Mother was one of the first American Airline stewardess', danced with the Ebsen sisters, raised 3 beautiful children and was married for 65 years....good for her....she did it all ! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Rest in Peace Mrs. Fonda ! Love, Bonnie

My beautiful, lovely mother, Jeannie Ryan Fonda, passed away at the stroke of midnight, On New Year's Day, with her beloved husband Bill, at her side. After 88 years of vibrancy, and class, my mother was an incredible woman who carried poise, grace, and strong character; she wore life as a loose garment. Her strength was clearly evident right up to the final hour. She danced with the Ebsen Sisters for many years, and staged benfit performances for charity, in the early and mid-eighties. We will always cherish her joie de vivre and her determination to soften the edges of this busy little girl. I miss you so much, Mom! Services will be hald on January 24th, at El Carmelo Cemetary, in Pacific Grove, California. Without my mother's influence, I would never have learned the first thing about compassion, nurturing, generosity and the authenticity of life. I am so lucky! Oh, and the clothes! The beautiful clothes!! I miss you so much, Mom!

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me,
For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born,
Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.
We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our hair at dawn,
We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn.
We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,
And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.
We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee'
And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me , Me.
Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many,
And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.
And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see
A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me , Me.
We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,
And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me , Me.
Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,
And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.
We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,
And Oprah couldn't talk, yet, in the Land That Made Me , Me.
We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin or Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me , Me.
We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,
And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and Zeppelins were not Led.
And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,
Madonna was a virgin in the Land That Made Me , Me.
We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,
And babies might be bottle-fed, but they weren't grown in jars.
And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,
And dorms were never coed in the Land That Made Me , Me.
We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,
And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.
And Hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,
And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me , Me.
Buicks came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks,
And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.
And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,
And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me , Me.
We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,
We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea
Or prime-time ads for condoms in the Land That Made Me , Me.
There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,
And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill.
And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,
And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me , Me.
But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,
And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A.
They send us invitations to join AARP,
We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me , Me.
So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,
And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me , Me.

Coach MERRITT STANFIELD passed away last weekend at the age of 81. He lived in Thousand Oaks, California. As some have written, and many remember, Coach Stanfield looked like he could suit up and play football right along with the other high school boys in 1961. When we entered Pali Coach Stanfield was only 34 years old and he was the heart throb of many of the Pali girls ! Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Cindy and his family at this difficult time. Merritt Stanfield suffered from Parkinson's disease for the past 6 or 7 years. Hi Ellen ! So sorry I read this after the HGTV aired! I love that stuff! I am always working on my sweet little house (not so little at 5 bedrooms, 2 baths and 11 gardens all by myself). I'm coaching Triathlon, Swim Team and running Pikes Peak. Broke my leg and had to have a plate and 6 screws inserted but I think no matter what happens I'm a runner and athlete at heart, so it merely causes me to adapt. Spring is gorgeous here and life is like the Palisades in the 50's!! Take care everyone! xoxo

Dear Graveline Girls;
Since you asked, Mike Walsh is the now retired owner of Walsh Vineyard Management in Napa, CA. He now lives in Cambria and still does vineyard consulting. He is a proud grandfather of three. Our older brother Don who went down in the bathyscaph Trieste, is also retired. He was the head of Oceanography at USC and still does consulting work and ocean explorations worldwide. It's nice of you to ask. I forwarded your hello to Mike.
All is well in Ohio, but I'm planning my move back to sunny California soon.
Hope you are all fine and dandy.

Hi Everyone:
Just came across this website again. Kudos to Bonnie for being the Keeper of the Flame. I had to add my two-cents about Ebsen's. I spent years there taking all sorts of classes. Don't think it made me more graceful but I too was under the spell of the wonderful and generous Helga and Velma. Blees them both. It was great to read older posts remembering, Dilly's, the trampolines,
Hot Dog Show, dances at the Youth House and OMG Mr Zabo at the Bay Theater. We didn't know how lucky we were/are. Thanks for the memories. And, yeah, what about the book - any news?

Hi Daniel,
Perhaps they have changed things since 1964 when we graduated ? Palisades High has ALWAYS been the DOLPHINS. The Spartans was the name of our Summer 1964 graduating class. Back in the 1960's each graduating class (ours was Summer 1964 - there was also a Winter 1964 Class) would vote on a class name and class colors at the beginning of 12th grade. Each member of the class could then purchase a sweater we had custom made with our class name and colors. Our class chose the name SPARTANS and the colors beige and brown. We all proudly wore our "Senior Sweaters" to school. Pali Hi opened in September 1961 with no Seniors. The first class to graduate was in the Winter of 1963 and they chose the name "POSEIDONS" with the colors blue and green. The next class to graduate from Pali was in S'63 (summer 1963) and they voted for the name "Jamaicans" and the colors green and white. The next graduating class was from W'64 (winter 1964) and they chose the name "PHOENICIANS" and had blue sweaters.
Did your graduating class of 2003 not have a name and class colors ??
Best regards,
Bonnie Graveline Worley

I know for a fact that RON GROSMAN not only can dance but is one of the smoothest dancers about. With Wilma Ebsen they earned the coveted TANGO trophy in 1961 Long Beach Dance off. He is still as smooth as they get with his feet.
Even after all these years he can spin, toss, twirl, throw, and sometimes catch and sachay his partner to no end. Hope there is no doubt remaining about his award winning gift.

Hi Lynn,
Yes, I remember the Trampolines across from Ebsen Studios. We now have a round Trampoline in our yard for our Grandkids, but it doesn't seem to have the same spring that you could get on the rectangular Trampolines in the Palisades ? My sister and I went there all the time. The latest on Leslie and Richards book is they are still working on it and have had trouble with their busy time schedules, but hope to continue it soon. Anyone else out there think they gave TOO MUCH personal information when answering their book questions ?? Oh well, we are 60 years old now. Lynn, to link your site here, just post or email your link to me and I will be happy to ad it to our list. Janie Larson, Wendy Price and I went to see The Jersey Boyz last week at the Ahmanson Theatre downtown...it was fantastic...we highly recommend it !!!
Enjoy your summer !

In the 60's, my mother was the creator innovator of a dance troupe, performing charity benfits throughout the 'west side' and beyond; she was coached by Vilma and Helga Ebsen, the most dynamic, and heartfelt duo I'd ever met! My brother took Cotillion from their studio;I was at the very cool Norma Wycoff(?)Carter Cotillion! Aditionally, when I was working in dental hygiene, post 1st divorce, in Pacific Palisades, my daughters were cared for, and tutored, in dance by Vilma and Helga! What fabulous women! I was in Palm Springs recently, as I read Vilma's obit. Also, Vilma's son, Robert Dolan bought Dad's Chapman's Ice Creamery, on Rodeo Drive. Unfortunately, Dolan defaulted on some payments, and the influential, cohesive city fathers desired the property for the strong influx of designers you see today.
My parents 63rd Anniversary is next month!!
Whenever I picked up my daughters, after work, I would run into Mary Tyler Moore, who seemed to pick up where my mother left off. My parents moved to Pebble Beach in 1969. Ms Tyler-Moore was tutored extensively by the Ebsen sisters; that talent could be witnessed over the course of many years, on television, and in movies.
Fantastic memories, those Ebsen sisters! Does anyone remember those trampolines across the street from their studio! It became the new hot spot that replaced roller skating, at Palisades Park!!
Also, who remembers the dances at the "Y" on Via de la Paz? Ironically, I am now employed by the "Y", in Colorado Springs, as a Swim Team coach!
Who was in my Brownie/Girl Scout troop (Pam Garland, + ??). Anyone remember I was 'kicked out'?? Ominous sign of things to come !

Hi (“Class of Summer ’64”) Classmates,
Pali High is trying to raise funds for a major “Track and Field Renovation Project”...
and they need our help.
Please take a minute and check-out the Pali website at http;//palihigh.enschool.org/
and if you are interested in making a donation to give financial support to this worthwhile cause,
please send them a contribution and mark it as coming from a classmate of the “Class of 1964”.
We have been told that anyone, or group (“Class of ’64” is what we are hoping to get listed),
contributing at least $1,000.00 will have their name placed on plaques in two separate locations –
one at the 50 yard line in the upper parking lot and the other across the ticket booth at the entrance,
and both plaques will be spot-lit..
The deadline, for donations/contributions, is September 1, 2007.
For all of you who are interested in contributing, please make a check payable to:
“Pali High Track & Field”, and send to Bob Jeffers at 16045 Aiglon Street, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272. Please make sure that you put on your check, in the memo section, that it is from the “Class of 1964”.
If you have any questions, you can call Bob at home at: (310) 230-8914, cell (213) 500-0545 or fax him at (310) 230-8924. His e-mail is forcopy@aol.com.

WOW! The memories you all offered were wonderful ! How well I remember going to Dilly's after roller skating at the park! Though my Dad was the coolest person I knew, he was forever lamenting the fact me and my friends hung out at Dilly's rather than his Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors store, on Swarthmore! Hang out at my Dad's store??!! I think NOT!! Great stuff everyone, thank you! And how I'd rather not remember some of those Saturday nights at the Olympic Drive-In; but I guess we were all there, weren't we ?
I went to Cotillion at Norma Carter's; the coolest place! Cathy Carter's mom!! Anyone else? Love those manners today!!

My step-brother, Jim Stangier (winter '65) and I took ballroom dancing at the Rivera Country Club. We tended to dance together, which was way less threatening then having to find a partner. We won a cha-cha contest in one of the competitions. I still have the pin given out at the end of the "term". Unfortunately, the dance lessons didn't really help my ability to move my feet. I am in the musical "Urinetown" which opens this Friday (May 11) and to dance and sing at the same time remains a challenge! Ah well, life! I keep telling myself that I am a great at art and pretty darn good on the Concertina...

SPARTANS - I am our Class Alumni Representative and I was asked to share the following message with you. Sincerely, Wendy Price Anderson
Palisades Charter High School Families and Supporters,
Right after graduation, the school will be breaking ground on a 1.5 million dollar upgrade of the football field and track. Although we have secured over a million in donations, the ever increasing
costs make it essential that we continue to raise money for this worthy cause. This new facility will not only benefit the students and sports teams, but the many local sports clubs who also use the field.
This state of the art facility will be a bold and beautiful statement about the upward trend of Pali High. Carl Lewis has generously donated his name and efforts to the track. It will be the only track in the world named after this great Olympic star other than his own high school in New Jersey.
Tax deductible donations of any amount are most appreciated and will help us give the students and the community the field and track it deserves. Donations of $1,000 or more will receive mention on a plaque at the entrance to the stadium.
Checks should be made out to: Palisades High Track & Field.
Please send to: Bob Jeffers, 16045 Aiglon Street, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
Be sure to include your address so that we can send you a letter of recognition for tax purposes.
For further info about special recognition for larger donors please call Bob Jeffers at: 310-230-8914
or email to: forcopy@aol.com

How many of you SPARTANS went to Cotillion, Ballet, Tap or any other dance lessons at Ebsen Studios ? If you did you cerainly remember the warm smile of owner VILMA EBSEN. Vilma passed away March 12, 2007 at the age of 96. Thank you for all you taught us Vilma. Keep dancing...
The following article is from the Los Angeles Times:
OBITUARIES
Vilma Ebsen, 96; dancer, Buddy's sister
The longtime instructor and her brother performed together on stage before appearing in MGM's 'Broadway Melody of 1936.'
By Dennis McLellan, Times Staff Writer
March 20, 2007
Vilma Ebsen, a dancer who, with her brother Buddy, performed on Broadway before appearing in MGM's "Broadway Melody of 1936," has died. She was 96.
Ebsen, a longtime dance teacher and co-owner of the Ebsen School of Dancing in Pacific Palisades, died in her sleep March 12 at the Thousand Oaks Health Care Center, said her son, Robert Dolan.
Ebsen was performing in a club in Atlantic City, N.J., in the summer of 1930 when she teamed on stage one night with her brother.
Ebsen, who had been dancing and teaching dancing at their father's dance school in Orlando, Fla., since she was a child, had moved to New York the year before, and Buddy had helped her get a job in the chorus during the run of "Whoopee," the hit Broadway musical comedy in which he was a dancer.
That night in Atlantic City, the Ebsens' lively dance routine, choreographed to "Ain't Misbehavin'," was a big hit at the sold-out club. Among those in the audience that night was Walter Winchell, the powerful columnist, whose one-paragraph rave review in the New York Daily Mirror the next day put them on the show-business map.
The team of Vilma and Buddy Ebsen was featured in the vaudeville revue "Broadway Stars of the Future," which took them to the legendary Palace Theatre.
The song and dance duo also appeared in the 1932-'33 Broadway musical revue "Flying Colors," in which they introduced "A Shine on Your Shoes." And they were featured in the 1934 edition of "Ziegfeld Follies," in which they sang "I Like the Likes of You."
Their success brought them to Hollywood to appear in the 1935 MGM musical "Broadway Melody of 1936."
In the film, the Ebsens introduced "Sing Before Breakfast" on a brownstone rooftop with Eleanor Powell. They also performed "On a Sunday Afternoon" and danced in the big "Broadway Rhythm" finale.
"Vilma and Buddy Ebsen danced together in just one movie, 'Broadway Melody of 1936': He tall and charmingly gawky, she gentle and warm. The combination was irresistible both on stage and in that film," Miles Kreuger, president of the Institute of the American Musical in Los Angeles, told The Times on Monday.
Added Kreuger, a friend of Vilma Ebsen's: "Her warmth was genuine and touched everyone she knew."
Although Buddy Ebsen went on to appear in other movies after completing "Broadway Melody of 1936," Vilma returned to New York, where her husband, Robert Emmett Dolan, was a Broadway conductor.
Said her son Robert: "Her story is [MGM chief] Louis B. Mayer said, 'I could make you the next Myrna Loy.' She looked at Mayer and said, 'I don't want to be the next Myrna Loy. I'm Vilma Ebsen.' "
Back in New York, she appeared in the musical comedy "Between the Devil," which ran on Broadway from 1937 to 1938, and she gave birth to Robert, her first son, in 1939.
In 1941, she and her husband moved to Pacific Palisades, where Buddy and his wife were living. She and Dolan, who became a seven-time Academy Award-nominated film composer, were divorced after World War II. In 1948, she married Stanley Briggs, an inventor and professional tennis player, with whom she had another son, Michael. She and Briggs later divorced.
In 1943, Ebsen and her sister, Helga, started the Ebsen School of Dancing in Pacific Palisades. They both taught at the school, which focused on ballet and tap dancing for children. The school, which was featured in a 1948 Life magazine cover story, continued to operate until the mid-1990s.
"It really became her life," her son Robert said. "She's got adoring students that go back for decades."
He said his mother, who continued to dance with her brother until 1942, was happy for his great success, which included starring as Jed Clampett on the long-running hit TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies."
"She absolutely adored Buddy," he said.
Buddy Ebsen died in 2003.
The fourth of five children, Vilma Ebsen was born Feb. 1, 1911, in Belleville, Ill. In 1917, the family moved to Florida, where Ebsen's father established the first Ebsen School of Dancing in Orlando.
Ebsen also was a strong swimmer. Coached by her father, she became a Florida state champion in the breaststroke in 1927.
While still in high school, she became director of the dance department at Rollins College in Orlando. She joined Buddy in New York in 1928, a year after graduating from high school.
In addition to her two sons, Ebsen is survived by two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Barbara Daniel Rowe....I have had several emails due to your posting and here is what all the emails circulating for the past few years are refering to:
Plagued by continuing attendance problems, Palisades Charter High School in 1998, instituted a strict attendance policy in which any student that was absent without valid excuse ten or more days during a single semester would be failed, regardless of his or her academic performance. In February 2002, 130 Palisades High students received failing grades under this policy.
Outcry was immediate and severe, despite the school's extensive efforts to notify students and parents of the policy. Los Angeles Unified School District officials sided with parents, stating that the policy may not be valid because it was not approved by the school board. Palisades officials countered that, as a charter school, they were exempt from governance by the board and free to make their own policies. They also argued that board members approved the attendance policy when they approved the school's charter.
The controversy put a spotlight on what many teachers feel is a growing problem: that their efforts to effectively educate the children trusted to them are often thwarted by politically powerful parents. Its this sentiment that led to the creative, yet FICTIONAL, phone message below. It was created by an anonymous author as a bit of humor to cynically express teachers' frustrations. It was never "voted unanimously by the office staff." In fact, Palisades Charter High School doesn't even have a menu-based phone system.
THE CIRCULATING EMAIL:
"Hello! You have reached the automated answering service of Pacific Palisades High School. In order to assist you in connecting to the right staff member, please listen to all the options before making a selection:

* To make excuses for why your child did not do his work- Press 2

Haven't visited the site for quite awhile. Sad to see so many gone. I too have visited The Wall in DC. Pete Drusdeau is also there with Todd. Very emotional experience. Wondering how the book our classmate was working on is coming. I had a nice visit with Barbara Null about 9-months back and email her from time to time. She is in Virginia and has a son in the Navy, Tad. We are all getting ready for a family vacation on The Big Island over Easter: Myself, husband Larry, Son Alan in the navy, his wife and their 2 daughters, Eldest daughter Eileen, her husband and their 2 little boys the youngest adopted from Hong Kong, Amy my youngest living in Hollywood the creative one, and my sister Monica. My brother, Lee now lives in Lahaina, Maui, some of you might remember him.
That's the main news...lots of other stuff too numerous to go into here.
Best wishes to you all and stay well and have a good life,

Just came across the Pali '64 website. I went to the 1984 reunion but that's the only one.
After Pali, I started college at UCSB, transferred to UCLA, got a BA, Teaching Credential, & MA (Geography) there, into the ‘70s. Got a job writing master plans & then environmental impact documents for the Army Corps of Engineers in downtown L.A. Got married, lived in Santa Monica, had kids. In 1988 we moved to the Half Moon Bay area, on the Pacific Ocean south of San Francisco, to manage environmental planning for the Navy in the western U.S. That office closed in 2006 so I retired. I bicycle along the ocean and walk a lot, & we love to travel. It's been a good life.
As I look at the names of our class of '64, it brings back nice if distant memories, of friends and things we did, and directions in life that we had yet to imagine or pursue. Hope you are all well & happy.

In response to Barbara and Gary:
I find myself more progressive than in my Pali days. I have spent the past 37 years attempting to get the message across to my students that they are the future of this country, that life challenges them to strive to reach beyond their barrio experiences, and they have an obligation to pay attention to the environment.
My current interest is studying issues that involve the marginalized of our society.
Gary, do you teach at St. Scholastica? I have relatives in Duluth near the campus. My mom grew up in Virginia, Mn., so you know I loved seeing the Iron Range country in the movie North Country. Your comment about Solution Radio is right on! Career change - I'd like to investigate the CASA program. Getting shorter with age? - how about my patience?

Hi Folks, I still don't know a URL from a corned beef sandwich, so be it! Ronald who? I would like to see a radio station called Solution Radio that would stop the business of partitioning the world into good guys and bad guys and try to solve problems instead.
Is anybody out there ready to retire (i.e. change carreers). This is my last year of teaching at a Catholic College in northern Minnesota. After that my wife and I will be working with an outdoor camp for women over 50 called Camp Kid Again.
A blessing on all your heads! Gary Gordon

I was very sad to learn of the passing of Mr. Russell Peterson the "Wood Shop" teacher at Paul Revere. Mr. Peterson also started Teen Tours in 1957 along with "Metal Shop" teacher Mr. Normandin. I went on Teen Tours in 1960 along with many of our classmates and it was the best summer I ever had. Rest in Peace Mr. Peterson, we will never forget you.

P.S. I forgot to tell you to first highlight the website by using your mouse (left click held down and run the mouse over the name of the sight to highlight it. Then, the letter "c" and "ctrl" held down together to copy the highlighted website. Next go to your search bar and hold down the letter "v" and "ctrl" at the same time and it will paste in what you highlighted. hope this helps those who are just learning. Best, Bonnie

SPARTANS, here's an interesting website on Birthdays that Janie Hansen told me about: http://www.paulsadowski.com/birthday.asp
Just copy and paste...
If you don't know how to do that ...just hold down the letter "C" and the "ctrl" on your keyboard at the same time.....it will highlight the website address. Next go to google or whatever your internet page is and instead of typing in each letter...just hit simultaneously the letter "V" and "ctrl" Hope that helps anyone new to computers...thats what copy and paste means. Enjoy !

Linda, I too have visited the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. and did the pencil etching over our dear classmate Todd Swanson's name and our upper classmate Tom Henshaw. Sadly, they both gave the ultimate sacrifice. I agree, it is a very deep emotional experience when you find their names on the Wall and do the pencil etching. As Linda said, if you are ever in Washington D.C. you should make every attempt possible to visit the Vietnam Memorial. Sorry you can't join us at Paul Revere...we will miss you.

Hi to all! Today is a slow day at work, so I thought I would catch-up on emails since the beginning of the year. So sad to hear about the loss of Steve Peters and Kathy Dillon. Too young to say good bye. I was recently in Washington, D.C. and visited "The Wall". I had promised myself long ago that I would visit my friend, Todd Swanson. It was so sad to see his name. If any of you go to D.C., Todd is 44 East, line 41. I am retiring from my work at Campbell Hall at the end of June. Looking forward to the next 30 years of discovery. Sorry I will not be able to make the Paul Revere 50th! Duty at school calls. Linda

This sad news was sent to me by Kathys beautiful daughter Teresa Drew Coughlin ( thomcoug@comcast.net) who attended Our 30th Pali Hi Reunion with her Mother. Kathy Dillon Drew was a member of our class from the beginning...starting at Pacific Palisades Grammar School, then all the way through Paul Revere and then another 3 years at Pali Hi. Dear All,
As most of you know, a year and a half ago, I spent two days in New York taping a two-hour ABC PrimeTime Live show on stepfamilies with Diane Sawyer.
The producer has just e-mailed me to announce, "with cautious optimism," that the show is now scheduled to air this Friday, April 21 starting at 9pm. They've borrowed the 20/20 slot, apparently, to enable them to hold on to the two hour format. Here in the Boston area, that's Channel 5.
The producer also said that, "The last 15 minutes or so will be a short piece on Mission Impossible...don't ask. I'm telling everyone to lock up their kids this week as scheduling our show for air usually means some sort of natural or manmade disaster is imminent."
(The show has been rescheduled at least twice--this fall it was pre-empted by Katrina.)
Let's hope it airs this time, and that it's good!
Warmly,
Patricia Papernow

REVERE _ Now you've struck a chord. This is where it all began for me. First day: The ninth-graders want to string me up on the flagpole and there's a swimming pool on the top of the gym. The music: "It's Only Make Believe," "Rockin' Robin'' and Barry Stagman in the hall saying he's related to one of the Teddy Bears. Learning to do the box step and mashed potatoes with Mickey and the sock hops in the gym with free tickets in the popcorn. The early romances with Richard and Konnie, Kent and Linda and girls in the classroom writing names of boys 100 times but never me. There was Fingers Fagin, only the guys would remember him, and our gym coaches Mr. Kahn, Mr. Needham and Mr. Merryman, who really enforced jock-strap snaps. This is enough for now, but I'll be there for the anniversary, maybe pulling along my daughter Jessica, 12, who I'm sure will keep on thinking that Dad's just plain weird.

Cowboy humorist Will Rogers' ranch house in Pacific Palisades reopens to visitors Saturday after a three-year $5-million renovation.
By Martha Groves, Times Staff Writer
March 21, 2006
The first-edition books inscribed by the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller and Harry Houdini are back on the shelves. The cowboy-and-Indian paintings and etchings by Charles Russell and Edward Borein are once again hanging on the walls. The custom Monterey couches and chairs made in the 1930s by Mason Manufacturing of Los Angeles have been arranged just so in the dining and living rooms.
After a three-year, $5-million restoration, Will Rogers' ranch house in Pacific Palisades is ready for its close-up. The house, where the cowboy humorist, actor and philanthropist lived until his death in a 1935 plane crash, will reopen to visitors Saturday.

Since leaving high school back in 1964, my life has traveled many paths. I graduated from UCLA in Nursing and spent 3 years working at the Venice Free Clinic and Drug Clinic before going on tp UCDavis for my masters as a Nurse Practitioner.I was the first civilian NP to work for the Navy at OakKnoll Hospital in Oakland, then spent 20 years in various departments at the Long Beach VA Hospital. I retired from there after 20 years and have spent the last 9 years doing clinical research in Long Beach. I travel for business often but my true passion is traveling for pleasure- all over the world. Just got back from Thailand and Cambodia and am planning to go to Turkey in October. I am divorced, have one daughter who is a hair stylist and my major dividend is that I get a cut and color for free. I have lived in Fountain Valley for the past 30 years and love both my job and my life. I have no contact with anyone from high school but have been in contact with some college friends. Would love to hear from locals and look forward to the next reunion.

The artistic expression is a very integral part of my world—very recently we lost Steve Peters, a wonderful artist and one of my best friends from Palisades Elementary and Paul Revere Jr. High. I remember warm, spring days at Palisades Park, learning to do a high-bar kip from Steve (I can still picture my calloused hands). I clearly recall Steve getting his first surfboard—the early days when practically no one surfed and the idea of a day at the beach was about canvas rafts and Junior Lifeguards. I laugh and cringe at the danger of us making a match-head bomb out of a metal Kodak film can and seeing it rip a hole in his backyard fence. And the day we went to Beverley Hills High School, saw the gym floor open up to a swimming pool and watched the varsity basketball team, were all special (Mr. Peter’s was the Principal). I never saw Steve again after graduation from Pali, but still have fond memories of Steve and his creative nature. Steve was one of my friends that I wish had come to the reunions, but am glad that he was once a true friend.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Steve Peters...thank you Bonnie Graveline for keeping us up to date on classmates. I grew up in Rustic Canyon, anyone know if Rustic Canyon Park is still there? I have not been to Southern California for over 30 years. Anyone remember when they use to call Rustic Canyon Park the "Uplifter's Ranch" ? WOW...does that ever date me. This is a wonderful site, I really enjoy it...wish more people would leave messages and tell what they are doing now. I'm a dentist in Sacramento and plan to come to the next reunion, I'm so sorry I missed the last one...but I sure enjoyed looking at all the photos.
Happy Wednesday everyone...is for me...my day off !!!

Sadly, I must report another classmate passing. STEVE PETERS passed away January 20, 2006 just 4 days before his 59th birthday. Steve went all the way through Palisades Elementary , Paul Revere and Pali Hi with so many of us. I remember when we were in grammar school his father was the Principal of Beverly Hills High School. Steve loved to draw and became a Graphic Artist. He lived for years in Santa Monica Canyon. In the late 1960s, he designed what has become the gold standard of surfboard logos: the original Natural Progression logo for the surf shop in Santa Monica Canyon. The logo appeared on thousands of T-shirts and sweatshirts and is known throughout the surfing world.
Rest in Peace Steve.....

Hi Spartans ! I just received this notice from our classmate Patricia Papernow and want to pass the word...Bonnie.
Hello All,
The producers at ABC PrimeTime Live have rescheduled the stepfamily show we taped with Diane Sawyer. It is set, at this moment, for Thursday March 16th, at 10 pm.
All is totally tentative in the tv world. Last time it was pre-empted by Katrina, so check the schedule!
I believe that they have worked hard to retain the two hour format, which means you might want to tape it if you like to go to sleep at a decent hour!

Hi All, Another "found" Spartan...Alice (Honner) White, and husband, Pieter, are now in Southborough, MA. The address that we had for them, in S. Natick, MA, was no longer good when we tried to reach Alice in 1993 for our 1994, 30-Year Reunion, but we now know how to reach her. . . . And, of course, we are wishing all of you, and your families, a very wonderful holiday season and a the happiest of New Years. Big hugs, Janie (& Wally)

The passing of our dear classmate ALAN CHRISTIAN has been very difficult for many of us. Alan served in Vietnam and was a victim of Agent Orange.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his Twin Sister Tina Christian Swartz at this most difficult time. Many of you knew Alan since Canyon Elementary School. One of Ileen Cohen's fondest memories of Alan was being his partner in a Maypole dance at Canyon Elementary. Alan was always so kind and nice to everyone. Rest in peace Alan, we will never forget you.

Hello Classmates...We need a little help for the class database: Barbara (Burton) Weingardt's address in Key West, FL is no longer any good and her telephone number, there, has been disconnected. Do any of you happen to have new/recent info. for her? The only website item we have found for her is (just cut & paste this URL/website address to see the article):
http://keynoter.com/articles/2004/04/09/lattitudes/lat04.txt
- which is a very nice, April 9, 2004, article about her
(including a photo of her) painting some wonderful tropical murals. If you have any recent address, telephone or e-mail address info. for her (I would say, within the past 3 to 6 months), please e-mail me. Thanks, Janie

“It is great to have friends when one is young, but indeed it is still more so when you are getting old. When we are young, friends are, like everything else, a matter of course. In the old days we know what it means to have them.” Edward Grieg
This week others and I have found ourselves facing the sadness of losing a close friend—Alan Christian died this week. In high school I had no better friend than Alan—he was generous, kind, thoughtful to a fault and was fearsomely dedicated. Although I didn’t have regular contact with Al over the last thirty-five years, when we occasionally talked and got together, it was always a quick reconnection and immediate sharing of our lives.
As the opening quote states, in my older years I more truly understand and appreciate the value of a friend—Alan was a friend to be cherished. He will be missed.

Thought some of you might get a kick out of this -- A little bit of humor that I just received from a friend who went to Uni:
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN GUILTY OF LOOKING AT OTHERS YOUR OWN AGE AND THINKING, "SURELY I CAN'T LOOK THAT OLD?" WELL...YOU'LL LOVE THIS ONE!
---------------------------------------------------
I WAS SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. I NOTICED HIS DDS DIPLOMA, WHICH BORE HIS FULL NAME.
SUDDENLY, I REMEMBERED A TALL, HANDSOME, DARK-HAIRED BOY WITH THE SAME NAME HAD BEEN IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SOME 40-ODD YEARS AGO. COULD HE BE THE SAME GUY THAT I HAD A SECRET CRUSH ON, WAY BACK THEN?
UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, I QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT. THIS BALDING GRAY-HAIRED MAN WITH THE DEEPLY LINED FACE WAS WAY TOO OLD TO HAVE BEEN MY CLASSMATE. HMMM, OR COULD HE?
AFTER HE EXAMINED MY TEETH, I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ATTENDED LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL.
"YES. YES, I DID. I'M A MUSTANG', HE GLEAMED WITH PRIDE."
"WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE?" I ASKED.
HE ANSWERED, "IN 1959. WHY DO YOU ASK?"
"YOU WERE IN MY CLASS!" I EXCLAIMED.
HE LOOKED AT ME CLOSELY. THEN, THAT UGLY, OLD, WRINKLED SON-OF-A-BITCH ASKED, "WHAT DID YOU TEACH?".

Another "found" classmate; and Class Database up-date:
Great news, STEVE KNUTH is no longer "missing"! Steve, and his wife, Sue, live in Saragota Springs, NY. They moved back there 3 years for a business opportunity; but said "We both feel that we will be returning to the West Coast in the not too distant future, although after having lived in a relatively small town now, we're having 2nd thoughts about LA." - - -
Also, we have had quite a few address and telephone number changes sent to us since the "Directory" was printed (back in Nov., 2004) for the Reunion Memory Book. Because we have promised everyone that we would not posting addresses or telephone numbers on the internet, we will be sending a list of up-dates to those classmates for whom we have a current e-mail address. If you have never received an e-mail from us, directly (we haven't sent many, though), then we do NOT have an e-mail address for you, in our database. If you send us your current e-mail address (along with your name at graduation) - to janiehansen@juno.com - we will add your/that info. to our records and include you in all future e-mails (FYI - we do NOT give out anyone's e-mail address info. without first contacting them and asking their permission - we do make address & phone number info. available, but to classmates only). I am so happy to finally connect with you all. Since I missed the 30 and 40th parties, I really think we need to have a 45 yr event. A two day event with maybe an informal picnic one day w/ a dinner the next or something similar would give us all time to chat with each other.
Life in Va. seems so far removed from LA, but I think of my Pali days often. I retired two yrs ago after 36 yrs with United as a flight attendant. Now I seem to have no time as I work at a winery as the event manager, invest and rehab houses, and volunteer at Habitat every week. So retirement is just going to another phase in your life.
I have given up my passion of Fox hunting as it got too costly w/ trips to the hospital, broken bones and concussions. Decided I wanted to live longer.
In the 80's I flew as Chief Pilot for an operator out of Harrisburg.,Pa.I miss flying but now can't afford to do it recreationally.
I have a son, Tad, who is almost 21. He is in the Navy and stationed at Pt. Hueneme, Ca with the Seabees. He will be deployed again in a few months. I am proud that he decided to serve his country in the Navy following my Dad and step-Dad who were both pilots.
The pictures from the reunion look great and everyone looks about the same, just more mature.
Janie has offered to send me a copy of the book so I will at least be able to recognize everyone at the next reunion.
Let me know if there is anything I can do from this side of the country.
Fondly, Barb

Re: Reunion Memory Book is being mail out this week
We are very pleased to let you know that the Memory Book from our reunion is finally finished, and is ready for mailing. It will be mailed out with 1st class (not bulk) postage by the end of this week, so...
Please keep an eye out for it - it will be in a large, white 9" X 12" envelope. You should probably expect to receive it sometime early next week.
If you have changed your address since the reunion, and you forgot to notify us of the change, your book could get lost-in-the-mail, but we hope not!
We would like to, again, give a great big thank you to those of you who were able to attend the reunion - we think it was the best reunion, yet! For those of you who could not make the reunion, we are looking forward to seeing you at the next one.
Since the reunion, we have heard from several more classmates who we had not found us prior to the reunion; and they all said that they felt so bad about missing all of our 40-Year Reunion fun, so...
Please remember to keep in contact with us and let us know your whereabouts, especially whenever you move.
Again, please be on the lookout for your Memory Book.
P.S. If you have change addresses, since the reunion, please e-mail your new information (address and telephone number/s) to Janie (Database), at janiehansen@juno.com. If your Memory Book is returned to us, because the address
we have is not current/correct, we will contact you to
let you know that we got it back.

We were in the same club and both of us had 'enduring' (well, I cheated a bit ) relationships that went like bread and butter. Tribute to a good man: Bill McGowan was one of my closest friends growing up. We called him Memo and greeted each other with "lay-ho" for reasons I can no longer recall. Some of the memories are best forgotten, like the time he and Freddie Samuelson lured me into a poison oak bush and I missed a week of school. But other things stand out as highlights of my formative years, from running cross country to the great honor of being best man at Bill and Kim (Shriver)'s wedding. . . . So it's time again to count our blessings and gather around to remember one of our own. Some of us were loose cannons, but Memo was a solid anchor in the middle of things. Which isn't to say that he wasn't just as capable of inspired lunatic hijinks. But there was something centered, self-confident and focused about him that most of us lacked, that drew us around him. Which may help explain his enduring high school "true love" with Mary Pearson, and later his extraordinarily successful business career and his marriage to a strong and generous wife -- and their two solid, good-hearted kids Wayne and Debbie -- who together nurtured him in loving solidarity through years of debilitating MS. We should all be so lucky . . . . In sadness and with warm memories, with a last lay-ho to an old pal, we love you Memo . . . . Lanny the Limp (aka Lowell Turner)

MEMORY BOOK update – The short of it: The book is almost ready and should be mailed out about the 1st or 2nd week in June! The long of it: A Memory Book, from our 40-Year Reunion, is currently being prepared; and the finalized artwork for it is supposed to be forwarded by the photographer, to the printer, this week. A copy of the Memory Book will be mailed to all classmates who attended the reunion, plus those people (non-attending classmates, faculty and reunion guests) who have already sent in an “advance order” along with a $15 check. We have just, yesterday, delivered the final/2nd “revised proof” copy of the Memory Book back to the photographer. They have told us that the book should be ready in 4 to 5 weeks. We are, therefore, planning to have the mailing of the books go out about the 1st or 2nd week in June. When the Memory Book is mailed (it will be mailed using 1st class postage, not Bulk Mail postage), we will post a message, here on the website, letting you all know that the books are “on-the-way”; and we will send e-mails, to those classmates for whom we have e-mail addresses, letting them know, too - so, at that point, please keep an eye out for it. We sure hope that you will all get a big kick out of seeing the portraits that were taken of everyone at the reunion, plus the additional photos and information that we have included in the book. If anyone has changed their mailing address since they last sent us their mailing address information, please let us know right away, so that we can get that information corrected in our database before the books are mailed out. To all of you who joined in the 40-Year Reunion fun, we send you a very big “Thank You”; and to all of you who could not make this one, we hope that you will be able to join us at the next one. [please send any changes of address and/or e-mail addresses, if we do not have yours, to: janiehansen@juno.com (Database Manager/Circulation) – FYI, all e-mail addresses that we have in our database are used by us for our reunion messages, only – we do not give out your e-mail addresses unless we contact you and get your permission first, but we are glad to forward e-mails, for you, if we can.] Thanks, again, Your 40-Year Reunion Committee

I SO agree, on a 45th ! This seems to be a very pivotal time in our lives ! I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to assist ! My parents went to all thier reunions, and the last one was a 45th. Not enough were around for a 50th, they were told.

Lay-oh Lanny the Limp. The CHA says a big YES to a 45th reunion. It doesn't even have to be a big fancy affair. A casual beach party/picnic would be great - anything! I'm still corresponding with some of my old friends as the result of the 40th reunion and don't want to wait 10 years to see them again. "Cha Cha" Garland.

FOR A 45th REUNION. Word on the street is that Carter Harrington wants a 45th and what do the rest of us think? Having looked at the reunion pictures I can see why Carter wants as many reunions as possible. For everyone else there are at least three good reasons: 1. we're a great group, 2. we're not getting any younger, and 3. to see what Rocky Knickerbocker wears. I'm for it!

I am very sad to report that our enthusiastic younger classmate CHRISTINE HANSEN VIDA (Pali S'65) passed away last weekend. Christine labeled herself "Berkley Nurse." In one of her last emails she told me she was going to rename herself "Berkley Nurse Comedian". Christine brought so much of her lively enthusiasm to our 40th Reunion and contributed many reunion photos to this website. She will be dearly missed. The details on her passing are still unknown. Christine was looking forward to her 40th Reunion for the Pali Class of 1965 to be held this Summer. Christine attended our reunion as the guest of Tom McGarvin. Christine loved the Internet and had a knack for finding "lost classmates".
REST IN PEACE CHRISTINE..... We will never forget you.

Hi, Bonnie Graveline! Just a quick note before I'm off to school (35th year of teaching) to wish you a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Remembering those joint parties we would have with Diane Pottberg way back when.
Have a good one! Jan

It was wonderful to be able to attend the 40th Pali64 Reunion. Worth the 2 1/2 day drive down south. The evening was too short to be able to talk to everyone I wanted to see but I do appreciate the former students that I did have a chance to talk to. The little blue dolphin given to the faculty is a nice momento of the occasion. You all looked so good and I say that knowing how old you all are!!Janie Hansen and her crew did a superb job. Janie Redmond did an outstanding job of locating faculty. She just did not give up!
I still teach in our high school here as a substitute because I enjoy it so much.
Since retiring in l991, I have had a chance to have some fun doing competitions in swimming and triathlons. This past year I have taken up flying Cessnas and soaring in gliders in our uncrowded skies.
Eat well, stay well, Spartans, so you too, can have fun in retirement!
